Improvement of a COPD, IPF and Acid Reflux Patient in 6 weeks
A 64 y.o. male patient was diagnosed with COPD and IPF. He is an active person who has early stage COPD. His lung capacity is in the 90% range. X-rays showed some scarring in the lungs indicating IPF. The patient had recently been treated for his second round of pneumonia within a year using antibiotics and steroids prior to coming to Sharon Shuppert, Dipl.OM, L.Ac. The patient still had a cough with thick green to brown phlegm. He had noticed shortness of breath with exertion when he was hiking, cycling, etc. The patient was energetic and very positive. He was enjoying life and wanted to continue to do so, but his cough, shortness of breath and bouts of fatigue had interfered with his activities and his sleep. The patient also suffered from prostatitis and some acid reflux. He took anti-acid daily.

Sharon's diagnosis for the patient was Toxic Lung Heat; Heat and Blood Stagnation in the Lower Jiao; Stomach Cold. She gave the patient Jade, ClearLung, Java, NewBase, and Spring Capsule from Wei Laboratories. Jade supports Lung Qi to increase blood flow to the lungs and enhance its immunity. ClearLung helps clear lung inflammation in the bronchi and air sacs caused by infections or irritants. Java helps improve lymphatic circulation. NewBase removes deficiency heat in the kidneys. The Spring Capsule warms up the middle jiao (upper GI tract) to improve blood flow to the stomach to help resolve acid reflux. She also gave the patient customized tea: Bei Mu Gua Luo San, Qing Zao Jiu Fei Tang, with Lower Resolve* and Astringent* for help with prostatitis, which are blood mover and anti-inflammatory formulas for the lower jiao. To further help resolve the acid reflux, Sharon suggested food-combining diet: avoiding starches with proteins in a single meal; no fluids with a meal or for 1-2 hours afterward.

After 2 weeks, the patient noted that his nose was not running, he could take a deep breath without coughing, and found going upstairs easier. His cough became deeper and more productive with light colored phlegm (no more brown color in the phlegm). His acid reflux was improved and had only taken antacid 1 x in 2 weeks, which was a big improvement from daily usage of antacid before treatment.

After 4 weeks, his cough was less frequent with less mucous and phlegm production, his phlegm was a small amount of thick and white phlegm. His acid reflux was under control with adjustments to diet (proper food combining and avoiding tomato products). His energy ranges from an 8-9 out of 10!

The patient still has a cough with thick, sticky white phlegm that takes work to expel. A deep exhalation can cause a deep coughing fit with vomiting if he has just eaten. Recent X-rays still shows possible pneumonia. Currently, the patient is continuing the treatment to see more improvement.
