What is Skin Scar Removal?
There are a number of different types of scars and techniques that can be used to remove them. Some of the techniques used to remove scars are simple and non-invasive, others are more high-tech like lasers, cryotherapy, or radiation therapy. The type of scar and its location on the body are important considerations when determining which treatment protocol would be most effective. Understanding the different types of scars and scar removal techniques is essential to finding the best treatment method.

A scar is an area of the skin that has been wounded and its texture, pigmentation, and blood supply altered in some way as a result. There are many different types of scars that can develop in response to a wound including erythematous, pigmented, hypertrophic, atrophic, or keloid scars. Some scars develop right over the top of the original wound while other scars extend beyond the initial boundaries of the wounded area. Some scars are red while other scars are white, shiny, or even purple. Some scars are raised above the surface of the skin while others are flush with it or even sunken down into the skin.

Scar tissue does not always develop predictably and the type of scar that develops in response to a wound will depend on various factors. For example, hypertrophic scars are more likely to develop on the chest, upper arms, and upper back. Keloid scars, in contrast, tend to appear more commonly on darker skinned individuals and are particularly common on the earlobes, shoulders, back, chest, and neck. Though most scars are self-limiting, keloid scars can grow out of control. Essentially, the look and feel of a scar can vary considerably and the treatment used to get rid of a scar needs to be specifically tailored to its unique features.
