Successful Treatment of Long Term Facial Pain and TMJ
In March 2008, a 58 year old female patient came in for treatment of severe long term facial pain caused by a history of TMJ, oral surgeries, and root canals over the years. This patient suffered from this condition for over 10 years, and she previously sought treatment from 3 dentists, 2 oral surgeons, a physical therapist, and a neurologist, to no avail. In addition, one of her previous Novocain injections in the jaw caused intense throbbing for 3 days and 2 permanent lumps to develop in her jaw. This patients pain symptoms also caused severe panic attacks, anxiety, disorientation, nausea and fainting. As a result, she could no longer drive or ride in a car. Her husband had to accompany her to run errands, in case she had a fainting spell. The patients neurologist put her on many pain and anxiety medications, which did not alleviate her symptoms.
Dr. Corlett treated this patient with orthopedic kinesiology, energy work and acupuncture for about 8 months. After the first 3 weeks of treatment, the patient reported that she had more energy and could ride in a car without feeling ill. She also had a 45% improvement in her pain symptoms. Dr. Corlett continued to treat this patient once a month and after 6 months of treatment, the patients pain symptoms had virtually disappeared. After completing the treatment, the patient felt like herself again and she was able to participate in normal daily activities.
